First Cycle Programmes (Bachelor's Degree)

Faculty of Engineering - Civil Engineering - - Civil Engineering

General Description

The Department of Civil Engineering was established under Giresun University in 2012. The department started undergraduate education in 2016 and graduated its first students in 2020.

Graduates of the program are awarded a Bachelor's Degree with the title of "Civil Engineer."

This program is defined as a Level 6 Bachelor's Degree program in accordance with the Turkish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (TQF-HE) and the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).

Admission to the Department of Civil Engineering is based on the results of the centralized examination system conducted by the Measurement, Selection, and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates are placed according to the exam results of the relevant year, their preference rankings, and available quotas. Additionally, graduates of Vocational Schools can be admitted to the department through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS). Furthermore, students who have graduated from relevant fields may also be placed in the program in accordance with the procedures and principles determined by ÖSYM under the engineering completion program.

The provisions of the "Regulation on Transfers Between Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, Minor, and Credit Transfer Between Institutions in Higher Education Institutions" are applied in the department. Within this scope, the equivalence and recognition of courses taken in different higher education institutions or programs are evaluated based on the relevant regulation and the university's "Course Exemption and Adjustment Procedures Directive." Courses successfully completed in previous educational processes are aligned with the curriculum and qualification levels and approved by the academic board. During these processes, the standards set by the Higher Education Council and the regulations of the university are taken as the basis.

To successfully graduate from the program, students must complete all courses equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS credits, achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.50 out of 4.00, and successfully complete a mandatory 60-day internship.

The Civil Engineering Program aims to teach students the fundamental principles of engineering sciences while equipping them with practical knowledge and skills for application. The program is designed to cover core engineering fields such as structures, geotechnics, transportation, water resources, and materials. Graduates gain the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively work on engineering projects that comply with both national and international standards.

Civil engineering graduates have extensive career opportunities in both the public and private sectors. They can work in public institutions such as the General Directorate of Highways, State Hydraulic Works, and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. In the private sector, they may serve as site supervisors, project engineers, or designers. Additionally, they can join national and international construction companies or establish their own businesses to operate as entrepreneurs. Our graduates also have the opportunity to take on roles as designers or practitioners in large-scale infrastructure projects such as dams, bridges, roads, tunnels, and metro systems.

Applications to Giresun University's graduate programs are submitted online under specified conditions, and in-person or postal applications are not accepted (except for international candidates). During the application process, candidates must provide accurate and complete information; otherwise, their applications will be deemed invalid. Applicants for thesis-based master’s programs are expected to have a minimum score of 55 in the relevant category of the ALES exam. The admission success score is calculated by taking 65% of the ALES score, 25% of the undergraduate GPA, and 10% of the foreign language score, if available. Candidates with a success score below 60 are considered unsuccessful. For doctoral program applications, candidates are required to have a minimum score of 55 in centrally administered foreign language exams accepted by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). While there is no foreign language requirement for master’s programs, if a foreign language score is submitted, it contributes 10% to the general success score calculation. An interview exam is mandatory for doctoral programs, and placement is carried out based on admission success rankings and available quotas. Applications with missing or incorrect information will be invalidated, and all required documents must be submitted within the specified timeframe for final registration. The list of eligible candidates is announced as primary and reserve, and those who fail to complete their registration within the given deadlines forfeit their rights. Reserve lists are announced for unfilled quotas, and placement is made based on success rankings. Candidates already registered in a thesis-based master's or doctoral program at another higher education institution must cancel their existing enrollment before final registration. For candidates requiring a scientific preparation program during their graduate education, the provisions of Article 15 of Giresun University’s Graduate Education-Instruction and Examination Regulation apply. All application and registration processes are conducted in accordance with relevant regulations and university policies.

The examination and evaluation processes in the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program are conducted in accordance with university regulations. Each semester, at least one midterm and one final exam are held for course evaluation. Midterm exams are scheduled within the periods specified in the academic calendar, organized by the relevant department, and announced at least ten business days in advance. A maximum of two exams can be conducted on the same day. The arrangement and supervision of exams are ensured by the relevant units. In addition to midterm exams, other evaluation methods such as assignments, practical applications, and quizzes may be employed. The contribution of these methods to the semester grade is determined by the course instructor and announced at the beginning of the academic year. Semester activities and exams are graded on a scale of 100 points. The final grade is calculated by considering the semester activities and the final exam scores. The contribution of the final exam to the grade can range from 40% to 60%. Students must score at least 60 points in final and makeup exams. Eligibility to sit for final exams requires meeting attendance requirements and successfully completing practical components of the course. In exam evaluations, scores out of 100 are converted to letter grades. A score of 90-100 corresponds to an "AA" with a GPA coefficient of 4.00. Scores of 85-89, 80-84, 70-79, and 60-69 correspond to "BA" (3.75), "BB" (3.50), "CB" (3.00), and "CC" (2.50), respectively, and are considered passing grades. Scores of 50-59, 40-49, 30-39, and 0-29 correspond to "DC" (2.00), "DD" (1.50), "FD" (1.00), and "FF" (0.00), respectively, and are considered failing grades. Students have the right to appeal exam results within five business days following the announcement of the results. Appeals are reviewed by the course instructor, and decisions are finalized with the approval of the relevant academic board. Makeup exams are held at the end of the semester for courses where students have failed, and the scores obtained replace the final exam scores. For students with only one course left for graduation, a graduation exam is held on the date specified in the academic calendar. The score obtained in this exam is directly considered as the final grade. Exam papers and related documents are retained by the relevant unit for at least two years.

To graduate from the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program, students must successfully complete all courses, practical applications, and internship requirements in their registered program, accumulate at least 240 ECTS credits, and achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.50. Attendance is mandatory for at least 70% of theoretical courses and 80% of practical courses. Students are also required to complete the mandatory internships, have their internship reports evaluated successfully, and obtain approval for their capstone project by a jury. Students with a Graduation CGPA between 3.00 and 3.49 graduate as "Honor Students," while those with a CGPA of 3.50 or higher are recognized as "High Honor Students." This distinction is recorded on both the diploma and diploma supplement. A graduation exam may be conducted for students with only one remaining course for graduation. Graduating students receive an internationally recognized diploma and an English diploma supplement.
